Recently a Holiday Inn was having theft problems from their guests in their rooms. An increase in external security and further evaluation led us to believe it was someone working from the inside of the hotel. Keeping in mind that none of the theft reports indicated forced entry and that some thefts actually took place while the guest was in the room sleeping, we began reviewing how someone could commit these crimes in this fashion. After further analysis we found that many of the guest room doors were not "self-closing" as designed. ASG then placed covert security in various rooms with valuables in plain sight and the main door to the room not latched.
One evening during this operation the suspect came into one of the rooms that we had secured and made an attempt to get a wallet when he was apprehended by ASG security officers. ASG investigators then checked into the background of this individual and found that he had a criminal history involving theft and was on probation for similar offenses. The suspect led employees at the business to believe that he was a guest and that he was also a security officer for a different company. Since his arrest these thefts have ceased
